Card counting is a mathematical blackjack strategy that estimates whether the undealt cards are likely to favour the player or the casino. It does not require somebody to memorise every card.
Instead, the player assigns simple values to groups of cards, maintains a running count and adjusts it for the number of decks remaining.
A skilled counter may gain a small long-term advantage under suitable conditions, but card counting does not guarantee a profit.

What Is Card Counting in Blackjack?
Card counting tracks the changing composition of a blackjack shoe. The basic idea is that high and low cards do not affect the player and dealer equally.
In the popular Hi-Lo system, cards receive the following values:

The Effect of Removal, usually shortened to EOR, estimates how removing a particular card rank changes the house edge.
Removing a five, for example, usually helps the player because fives are particularly useful to the dealer when completing stiff hands.
A counting system consequently gives low cards positive values:
when those cards appear, the count rises to indicate that the remaining shoe has become more favourable.
Removing a ten or Ace normally harms the player’s prospects, so those cards receive negative values. Sevens, eights and nines have a smaller overall effect and are neutral in simple systems such as Hi-Lo.
Advanced systems use values such as +2, -2 or fractions because these tags can correspond more closely to the actual EOR of each rank.
The trade-off is greater mental difficulty. A theoretically precise system can perform worse in practice if the player makes counting errors.
How Do Players Maintain a Running Count?
The running count is the total of all card values seen since the shuffle.
Suppose the first exposed cards are:
- 3: +1
- Queen: -1
- 6: +1
- Ace: -1
The running count returns to zero.
A counter follows every visible card, including the dealer’s cards and cards dealt to other players. The objective is not to remember individual cards but to update one number accurately.
Speed and accuracy matter. Before attempting the technique at a casino, a player should be able to count through a complete deck without errors while handling normal distractions.
What Is the Difference Between a Running Count and True Count?
A running count does not account for the number of decks still in the shoe. A count of +6 is significant with one deck remaining but much less meaningful with five decks remaining.
The true count corrects this:

Why Does Deck Penetration Matter?
Deck penetration describes the percentage of the shoe dealt before the shuffle.
A six-deck game that deals five decks before shuffling offers substantially more useful information than one that deals only three decks. Counts tend to become more meaningful later in the shoe because fewer unknown cards remain.
Continuous shuffling machines return used cards to the available pool throughout play. This prevents the stable tracking of a finite shoe and makes conventional card counting ineffective.
How Should a Card Counter Size Bets?
Counting identifies potentially favourable situations, but bet sizing determines how much money is exposed to them. A planned connection between the true count and wager is called a bet ramp.
The following is an illustrative 1-to-8-unit Hi-Lo ramp. It is not a universal recommendation.

If one unit is £10, the wagers would range from £10 to £80. The actual advantage associated with each count depends on the rules.
A rough shortcut sometimes used for Hi-Lo is that each additional true-count point moves the edge by approximately 0.5 percentage points, but that estimate is not exact.
A game starting with a 0.6% house edge might therefore be close to break-even around true count +1 and modestly favourable at +2. A poor 6:5 game may remain unattractive for longer.
How Does the Kelly Criterion Apply?
The Kelly Criterion is a mathematical approach that makes the wager proportional to the player’s estimated edge and available bankroll.
In simplified blackjack modelling:
Full-Kelly fraction ≈ player edge ÷ hand variance
If a player estimates a 1% edge and uses a variance assumption of 1.3:
0.01 ÷ 1.3 = 0.0077
Full Kelly would suggest risking approximately 0.77% of the bankroll. With a £10,000 bankroll, that would be about £77. Half Kelly would reduce the amount to approximately £38.50.
Many players prefer fractional Kelly because full Kelly can produce severe bankroll swings.
At its logical extreme, Kelly betting calls for no wager when the player does not have a positive expectation. Back-counting is one way of applying that principle.
Kelly calculations rely on estimates, however. If the edge, rules, remaining decks or variance are miscalculated, the suggested wager will also be wrong.
What Is Back-Counting or Wonging in Blackjack?
Back-counting means observing a blackjack table and keeping the count without placing a wager. The player enters only when the true count becomes sufficiently favourable and leaves when the advantage disappears.

Expected value is a long-term mathematical average, not a prediction of what will happen in one session.
A simplified calculation is:
Expected hourly return = hands per hour × average wager × average player edge
If a counter achieves a 1% average edge, places $100 in action per hand and plays 50 hands per hour:
50 × $100 × 1% = $50 expected value per hour
The same arithmetic with £100 average wagers produces a theoretical EV of £50 per hour.
This does not mean the player will win £50 during each hour. A session could finish hundreds or thousands of pounds above or below expectation. The edge becomes visible only across a very large number of correctly played hands.
Travel, accommodation, tipping, mistakes, casino restrictions and time spent looking for playable tables can also reduce the real return.
How Large Should the Bankroll Be?
A commonly quoted rule is to hold a bankroll equal to at least 100 times the maximum wager. With an £800 maximum bet, that rule would require £80,000.
It is only a rough guideline. Risk of ruin depends on:

Hi-Lo
Hi-Lo is the standard starting point for many players. It is balanced, straightforward and sufficiently accurate for most betting decisions. A full deck returns the count to zero.
KO
Knock-Out is an unbalanced system that counts sevens as +1. It uses a predetermined starting count and key count, avoiding routine true-count conversion.

A fast game is valuable only when the conditions are favourable. Playing more hands at a poor table simply exposes the bankroll to the house edge more quickly.

What Did the Ken Uston Case Decide?
Ken Uston was excluded from the blackjack tables at Resorts International in Atlantic City in January 1979 because of his card-counting strategy.
In Uston v Resorts International Hotel, decided in 1982, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that the state Casino Control Commission had exclusive authority over permitted methods of play.
Resorts could not independently exclude Uston for counting under the regulatory position then in force.
This was an important card-counting precedent, but it applied to New Jersey’s particular statutory system. It did not create a right to count cards in British casinos.

The British case Ivey v Genting Casinos concerned edge sorting in baccarat, not conventional card counting. Phil Ivey had persuaded the dealer to rotate particular cards, allowing irregularities in their back patterns to be exploited.

Spotting a bottom card, tracking a known section and using a permitted cut to influence where it enters play are related techniques. They do not form part of ordinary Hi-Lo counting.
No technique guarantees control over the next card. Marking cards, using concealed devices, manipulating equipment or deceptively influencing the dealer could also move the conduct from observation into cheating.
Can Card Counting Work in Online Blackjack?
Card counting is ineffective in most RNG blackjack because the virtual deck is normally shuffled after each hand or generated in a way that makes previous cards irrelevant.
